Branch Ninety Nine
“Why are you being so sweet?” she asked snatching her hand from his.
“What do you mean?”
“They say when a person changes drastically then they might be heading to their death,” she said out of the blue. “Are you dying by chance?” she gasped as her hands went over her mouth.
“I am not dying,” he told her pulling her hand down and peering into her eyes.
“Your sweetness is scary. Even this trip to this park makes me wonder what is going on with you”
“There is nothing out of the ordinary going on with me” he laughed as he took her hands. “There would be a lot of people here who know me and by extension know you too. Why don’t we play the happy couple role?” he asked in a whisper.
If playing a happy couple role was what it took for her to hold onto his then she might as well take the opportunity.
“Sure, get ready to be amazed,” she said back in a whisper.
“Please no bad acting today” he teased.
“When did I ever have bad acting skills?” she asked in a fake cry.
“Every time we have had to act the happy couple role ever,” he said.
“I guess I have to get my game on,” she said a smirk climbing her face. She wiggled her way out of his grip and slipped her hand to hold his forearm. Xavier gulped hard when her hand went into his.
He was able to keep his cool when he was the one in the lead of the teasing but now that she was doing it to him he felt corned and trapped by her tactics.
“Let’s go,” she said in a high-pitched voice. They walked to the ticketing booth hand in hand and joined the queue.
“It’s Xavier Delgado” a girl in front of them whispered to her friend’s ears.
They both looked back and the shock to see him in their city and behind them was evident on their faces.
“Hi, Mr. Delgado” one of the girls mustered to say.
“Hi,” Xavier said and looked away.
“Can you see how hot he looks in that t-shirt?” the other girl whispered.
Maybe they thought they were whispering because Jessica could hear all they were saying and she was sure that Xavier could hear them too because of the smug expression on his face.
The queue moved and they got their ticket. The ticket booth guy stopped them to take a picture with them. As they walked away Xavier laughed a bit.
“What’s funny? That you are popular even here. And I do not get it anyways you aren’t a celebrity” she complained.
She hated that the entire queue had others fawning over him even though she was latched to him she felt out of place there. She hated that she was only included in the picture from earlier because Xavier insisted. She was not jealous she just hated the interactions.
“No that is not it,” he said. “It’s just that I think we should have come here when there aren’t a lot of people in it or should I have rented it out for a day?”
“Everything must be rosy for you,” she said pinching his arm a little.
“I am a Delgado after all”
“Let’s go on that,” Jessica said pointing to one of the big rides.
Xavier felt his eyes widen and a knot form in his throat. “That?” he asked pointing at it.
“Yes that,” she said pulling him with her.
“Wait,” he said stopping.
“What? Don’t tell me you are afraid of going on that?” she asked.
“Why would a grown man like me be afraid of a small ride? I just think we should do every other thing and leave the best for last” he said hoping that she would not find out his newly found fear of heights.
He had never known that he had a phobia of height until he saw the height of the ride she proposed.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
“When you go to an amusement park you always ride the best ride first and since you have acknowledged that this is the best ride we shall ride that first,” she said pulling him again.
His mind drew blank. He did not know what other kind of excuse he could use to excuse himself from going up that ride. He swallowed spit multiple times as he went with her.
“Two tickets please,” she said to the operator of the ride.
“Okay ma’am,” the operator said tearing two tickets and stretching his hand to her. “Oh my sir, you do not look too well,” he said when he saw the expression on Xavier’s face. “Would you like to sit this ride out?”
“Do not worry about him. He is just afraid” Jessica replied before Xavier could get a word out.
“I do feel a little funny,” Xavier said. How could he go on that ride? He would not only embarrass himself in front of Xavier but also the presence of every other person present there. He was a public figure after all.
“So am I supposed to go on my own?” Jessica asked with a sad expression that sent a pang of guilt to Xavier.
“I do feel a little funny but I have to go with my wife on this ride,” he said changing his words.
Her expression would not allow him to see through to stay down while she climbed up. He was a man and had done enough scary things how bad could a ride at a kiddie’s park be?
“Awwwn” One of the women around them who had been overhearing their conversation sighed with heart shooting out her eyes. “You really are the standard in all areas” the woman continued.
“Let’s go” Jessica said pulling him. They were guided to her seat and they both sat down and waited.
“You did not have to do that,” Jessica said low and slowly.
“Then why did you have to have that expression across your face?”
“What expression?”
“That sad cute expression that made me feel funny,” he said.
“I know you are afraid of coming up here and I think it’s fine. You can still go down before the ride starts”
“Don’t take back your words then” Xavier said as his hands found their way to the belt that the guide had helped them with.
“Please stay seated” a voice over the public address went.
“I guess you can’t get down now since it’s about to start”
