Chapter 1708
*
Summer froze. "Mr. Lucas... which one? Was it Ben's father?" she wondered.
After all, when Ben decided to go after her, no one could stop him, not even his own father.
"Which Mr. Lucas?" Summer asked, needing clarity.
The man in front of her looked at her incredulously, as though her confusion was ridiculous. "Do you really need us to spell it out for you? You know perfectly well who you crossed."noveldrama
Who else could it be but Ben?
Taking a deep breath, Summer braced herself. She couldn't understand why Ben, known for his ruthless determination, would suddenly change his mind. Why would he repay her actions with forgiveness? Curious and desperate for answers, she sought him out.
When she found him, Ben was with Jamie. The two of them looked utterly happy, their connection unmistakable. Summer felt a pang of emotion as she watched them, but before she could dwell on it, Jamie stepped forward to meet her. Seeing Jamie up close left Summer momentarily stunned. How long had it been?
Jamie looked radiant, almost like a completely different person. The phrase "love is like nurturing a flower" came to mind. She seemed to bloom beautifully under Ben's care.
"Was it you?" Summer's voice was hoarse as she asked. "Were you the one who convinced Ben to let me go?"
The words burned her throat. She had spent so much time studying Ben, trying to understand him. She knew him to be someone who always paid back grievances in full. He was not the type to forgive easily.
Jamie's response was calm and unbothered. "Not letting you go would mean we still cared about what happened. Ben and I are happy now. You're nothing more than a passerby to us." A passerby.
The word pierced Summer's heart without warning.
She had spent years loving Ben, chasing after him, trying everything to earn his affection. But in the end, she was left with nothing.
A bitter smile tugged at her lips. "Thank you for reminding me," Summer said, her voice trembling. "Jamie... you really are a good person."
Her throat tightened as she tried to hold back tears.
Jamie was indeed kind. If it hadn't been for her, Summer would still be trapped in that nightmare.
But what shocked Summer even
more was Jamie's next words. "Your family won't be targeted anymore, either. Focus on your career and
stop wasting your energy on people who don't deserve it."
"You..." Summer's breathing grew heavier. She opened her mouth to respond but found herself unable to form the words.
Jamie smiled faintly. "Go home. Your family misses you. I have things to take care of, but if we have time, we can meet again. After all, your friend is now one of my business partners." With that, Jamie waved goodbye.
Summer stood frozen, staring
blankly at Jamie's retreating figure. It was only then that she truly understood why Ben had never been drawn to her, despite her privileged background, and why he couldn't forget Jamie.
Letting out a bitter laugh, Summer shook her head. "When it comes to kindness and a pure heart, I'll never measure up to her," she muttered.
When Jamie returned to Ben, his gaze hadn't left her for a moment. He had been watching her closely, worried that Summer might try something against her.
Noticing the concern in his eyes, Jamie let out a soft laugh. "Do you really think I'm that helpless?"
Ben's expression remained serious. "I'm just afraid of you getting hurt. I can't let anything happen to you. Jamie, do you know how hard it was for me to finally have you in my life? No one knows how much I went through to make sure I could keep you."
He gently gripped her shoulders, his gaze unwavering and full of determination.
