Chapter 65 ~ There she is
One month later.....
"You look beautiful." Zayan says, and I laugh as I stuff another piece of apple pie in my mouth.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
I was bored out of my mind, and I'd have done anything to pass time so I wouldn't think about labor just for one more second.
Sadly, I had missed my white coat ceremony. It broke my heart, but Ariana said we would fix It once I gave birth.
Anyway, so I tried reaching out to Sloane, but she had left the country, Mira was busy, and Noah was doing the meeting things the Kings do. My husband, however, was nowhere to be seen.
At this point, I don't even know if he still lives In our home. So, left with only one choice, I called Zayan, who was more than happy to hang out with a pregnant
woman.
We've been hanging out for some time, and it's been fun. I also learned that he's actually a doctor but rides horses to lay off some steam. Which is pretty cool.
I was unable to share much about me, and I just told him the basics.
You know,,
Orphan girl trying to push through.
I know there is a question he's been dying to ask, but I'm grateful that he hasn't. Who is the father of my child, and why did Alex drag me out of the race that day. I'm laughing at something Zayan said when all the hairs on my body rise at the voice that reaches my ears.
"Dr. Dawson. How lovely to see you again." Arnold's annoying voice taunts. "Look at that. You've already made besties with the famous Zayan Sinclair."
I grind my teeth, hating how he's making it sound like I'm only after his name. Hell,
I didn't even know his influence went that far off when I met him.
"Seems like you have a problem with me making friends." I grind out.
Arnold, with his annoying gelled hair, chuckles, "Friends is it? From where I'm standing, it surely looks like you're collecting infinity stones."
"That's enough." Zayan looks up, his brown eyes looking angry, and it's the first time I've ever seen this side of him.
"No need for the temper there. I mean, I do understand, Dr. Dawson has a way to stir powerful men. You should really teach me a trick or two."
"If you don't get the fuck out of my face in a second Arnold-" Zayan leaves the threat hanging.
Arnold raises his hands, "I wouldn't dare offend Ethan Sinclair's favourite cousin." His eyes turn to me, a sick smile playing on his lips and I just know whatever he's about to say will make me even more mad.
"Does Alex know where you are?" His eyes sweep over my body and lingers on my chest a second longer than I'd like.
When I first sat here, I was uncomfortable with my belly being swallowed whole by the table, but now I'm even more grateful.
"I don't see how that is any of your business." Zayan bites out, standing from his chair.
Arnold smirks, clearly enjoying himself.noveldrama
"Oh, but it is my business. See, Alexander King and I have... history. And I'd hate
for him to see this. You Know how possessive he can be.”
I freeze.
Alex didn't tell him anything about
our marriage or our relationship.
He's trying to see my reaction net
confirm what he suspects, unfortunately for him, I'm not dense.
Zayan must sense my irritation because he steps forward, his broad frame blocking me from Arnold's view"I suggest you leave before you say something you'll regret."
Arnold clicks his tongue. "Touchy, aren't we? Fine, I'll leave. But, Athena. He leans slightly to the
side, catching my gaze. "Just be
careful. You wouldn't want to end up in a crossfire."
I think I'm going to be sick.
"Let me just grab a take away, I'll eat from home." I finally find my voice.
"I'm sorry, Athena. But don't let what he said get to you." His brown eyes soften as
he tries to reach for my hand but I avoid his touch.
"What a lovely couple." an old woman comments as she passes by.
"I bet the babies will be the cutest." Another adds.
Zayan is a pink shade from being flustered as he clears the Bill and helps me up
when we get an Awwww from the restaurant.
Remember when I said I was bored?
I miss that and I'd pick that over having to deal with this right now.
The fresh air outside doesn't do much to settle the unease curling in my stomach. Arnold's words replay in my head, and honestly that man gives me the chills.
"Athena." Zayan's voice is gentle, careful. I know he's watching me, waiting for me to react.
"I'm fine." The words come out too quick, making him assess me even more so I force a small smile, but Zayan doesn't buy it.
He walks beside me, hands shoved in his pockets. "You don't have to worry about him. I can sort him out. I'm so mad he ruined our fun time."
"It wasn't ruined, I'm just tired. But I had a great time. Really." I say truthfully.
"Zayan." I stop walking, turning to face him when I realize he will want to drop me off but that's not a great idea.
As if reading my unspoken words, he shakes his head, "I'll drive you."
"No, I'll call a cab."
He hesitates, clearly torn, but finally sighs. "Alright. Text me when you get home?"
I nod.
By the time I slide into the backseat of a cab, my body is about to give out and I just want to sleep.
An hour later, the taxi pulls up the old apartment were we've been staying since I haven't yet finished decorating our home.
I quickly, pay him, mumble a thank you and rush inside so I can finish my food. I swear I can eat a meal meant for ten people.
But the moment I open the door, my breath stops as I'm met with green eyes.
Alex is Sitting on the couch, his head between his hands wearing his suit but without the jacket and the sleeves of the shirt rolled up.
My steps halt as his eyes drill into me.
"There she is. The mother of my unborn child." He bites out, his tone shockingly
calm.
What do you think?
