Chapter 56
Chapter 56
After the incident where the illegitimate child showed up at the wedding, Bruce no longer had complete trust in Thomas. So, Bruce didn’t allow Thomas to handle most of the matters related to Woland Group. However, Bruce barely managed to get anything done on his own after working his fingers to the bone for two days.
After taking over Woland Group, he didn’t manage to find a single issue that Alice had planted within the company. He didn’t even realize the obvious issues that were present in the company’s finances.
Meanwhile, Elijah was also hesitant to mess with Alice after what happened with the video. Alice found herself with too much free time on hand. Woland Group no longer belonged to her, and she was just an unemployed person, so she figured that she would do what unemployed people did. She headed out on a shopping spree, and she had strolled around until nearly 6.00PM when someone stopped her in her tracks.
“Our boss would like to meet you, Miss Woland.” Even though Caleb was there to give her orders, he was still polite in his approach.
Alice had met Liam in the past, but she had never met Caleb. It had been seven years since that night, and Alice never even considered how that night might have been related to anything. Alice merely stared at Caleb when he popped out of nowhere to block her way.
This guy is clearly a capable man. I’m sure he doesn’t work for Elijah—Elijah wouldn’t have failed to kill me for the past seven years if he could find someone as impressive as this, Alice thought. Could he be from the Yeager Family? Thomas can barely deal with his own issues, and Bruce is probably celebrating his victory now. Furthermore, the Yeagers have always preferred to sneak up on others, so it doesn’t seem like their style to invite me to meet them in such a direct manner.
“If you’re worried, you may contact one of your friends or even the police, Miss Woland.” Caleb offered her some options in order to lower her guard.
Ethan was waiting for Alice at home, and Caleb knew he had to bring her back. Alice no longer felt worried upon hearing Caleb’s words, and she figured that she had no reason to deny the other person’s invitation after hearing their suggestions. “Let’s go,” she uttered.
“This way, Miss Woland.” Heading into a hotel, Caleb led Alice over to a room door. He politely opened the door on behalf of her. Alice was rather puzzled at first. Who am I meeting? However, her legs turned to jelly the moment she saw the person in the room. She had always been a calm woman, but she nearly collapsed onto the ground at that moment! Why didn’t I see this coming?! It’s Mr. Knight! Ethan Knight!
Alice had no idea who was involved in the matter seven years ago, but she had been rather suspicious of Ethan after Ethan confronted her a while ago. However, it had been three days since that meet up with him, and he hadn’t approached her since, so she assumed that he wasn’t involved. After all, Alice figured that someone like Ethan would probably want to have things settled quickly—he wouldn’t wait three days before handling such issues.
So, she hadn’t expected herself to be brought to Ethan at all. She was genuinely shocked to see the man before her eyes!
Well, why is Mr. Knight asking for me now, then? Did he find out that I was the one around that night? If that’s the case, what’s he going to do with me? I slept with him, and I even handcuffed him to the bed. I think he might actually skin me alive as punishment.
“Do you know me?” Ethan curled his lips into a smirk when he saw Alice’s reaction. She seems to be overreacting. Is she hiding something? Ethan hadn’t found any evidence to indicate that Alice was the one who was responsible for what happened that night. In fact, most of the evidence seemed to prove that she wasn’t related to the matter.
Ethan ordered Liam to collect Alice’s fingerprints a second time. This time, Ethan had witnessed the process with his own eyes, and he was sure that the fingerprints belonged to Alice. However, the test results still indicated that the prints were different from what they found on the handcuffs. So, Ethan had no way to prove that Alice was the one involved.
Ethan had called Alice over to discuss the child, but now Alice’s reaction was simply too puzzling. Alice tried her best to calm the panic within her. She forced herself to act calm in front of Ethan. Although she wasn’t sure if Ethan had found any evidence that pointed toward her, she wanted to act cautiously as she didn’t want to expose herself by accident.
Maybe Mr. Knight is not sure yet. Maybe he’s just suspicious. Maybe he just wants to fool me, right? So, I need to stay calm, she thought to herself. “I’ve seen you from afar at a dinner party once, Mr. Knight.”
Alice wasn’t lying—she did bump into him during a dinner party once. However, he had been too far away for her to take a good look at him back then.
“Why would you look so shocked to see me if you’ve only seen me once from afar?” Ethan’s gaze landed on Alice’s face, and he scanned every part of her face to make sure that he didn’t miss out on any changes in her emotions.
He didn’t believe what Alice said at all. Why would she look so terrified of me if she has only seen me once? From what I’ve heard about her interactions with Naomi and Elijah, it seems like she’s no scaredy-cat at all. If she’s afraid of me now, that must mean that she’s lying or hiding something, he concluded.
“I wasn’t shocked. I… I just… You’re simply too handsome, Mr. Knight. That was why I felt my legs turn weak.” Alice widened her eyes to give the man an innocent look as she spoke in a serious tone.
The corner of Caleb’s lips twitched with annoyance. Caleb suspected that Alice was hiding something, but he didn’t know how to prove it. Well, she surely is the first person who has the guts to tease Mr. Knight in that way!
Ethan was taken aback by Alice’s words for a moment. How dare she? “Do you know why I told you to come?” He was far from trusting her. Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Alice blinked innocently. “I don’t,” she replied.
“I’ll give you another chance. Honesty is the best policy, right?” Ethan fixed his gaze directly on Alice’s eyes. His gaze was so sharp that Alice felt like it could pierce through her skin. She couldn’t help herself from shuddering with fear. It took a lot of determination and courage for one to attempt lying to a man like Ethan.
However, Alice was starting to calm down when she realized that Ethan probably wasn’t holding any evidence against her. If he had something to prove her faults, he wouldn’t sit around and chit-chat with her. Furthermore, it was clear that Ethan was trying to intimidate Alice with his fierce gaze. He’s obviously trying to trick me, Alice thought. He’s such a sly man. I would have been dead if I fell for his tricks!
So, Alice nodded before she responded in a stern tone. “Yeah, I agree. If honesty is the key to communication, then lies are like a huge bunch of keys that have no labels on them,” she replied.
Caleb couldn’t help but chuckle at Alice’s words—he hadn’t expected her to have such an adorable personality. Ethan felt like he was being ridiculed for a moment when he realized something about Alice. She’s so resistant! She really has her guard up!
Ethan finally decided to stop trying to trick her into saying something. If Alice was actually the one who was with him that night, and if she managed to handcuff him to the bed and escape without leaving any
evidence, it was unlikely for her to admit to her deeds at all. Furthermore, Ethan didn’t have any proof that she was the one involved.
“Let’s have a talk.” He finally decided to talk about the children instead.
Alice was stunned. A talk? Weren’t we just talking? We didn’t seem to have concluded anything. What else is there to talk about?
