Chapter 28 - Lucian's past
Savannah sat in front of me, staring intently. I had narrated my entire situation with Mark and Lucian to her. I was taking a massive risk, but I did not have a choice.
"Well, that's pretty messed up," she responded.
I nodded in agreement.
"You understand, don't you?" I pleaded with her.
"I think your friend Emma is right, you should talk about this with the Alpha, and clear your stand. He will be heartbroken because he had been waiting for his mate desperately. He was particularly difficult in the last two years. But it would be for the best, I believe."
I stared at her in disbelief. She was fine with me dumping her Alpha. I did not expect such a response from Savannah.
"Really? You think so?" I asked.
She hesitated for a moment.
"The pack recognizes the fact that you are still unmarked, and unmated." She said pointedly.
"Crap! So, those make-out sessions were not leaving enough scent to convince them." I thought internally.
"I heard them talk about it, mainly in the gym and kitchen. They wondered if you are his true mate. Mates do not remain unmarked for so long. The pack is offended. They feel you are intentionally hurting their Alpha. They love him. He provides for us and keeps us safe. He has kept you safe. They don't understand why he is drawn to you; some think it might be a mistake," she said.
I stared mournfully out of the window and felt miserable for myself. I could not even get the courage to tell Lucian my turmoil. Maybe they were right, maybe I was not good enough for him.
"So," She broke me out of my depressing trance, "I believe in the welfare of the pack rather than individual happiness. It's better to be a lone Alpha than having a Luna who is not interested." She said matter-of-factly.
I disliked her reasoning. My wolf growled.
"Lucian is mine!" Lana was on the edge, and I was having a hard time keeping her under control.
"Well, I am still thinking over it," I said.
"So, you agree to be our Luna?" Savannah asked, she seemed suspicious.
"No, it's hard to explain. I know nothing about Lucian, and with his history of violence, I mean he killed his dad's beta. I am simply scared. I want to avoid starting a pack war. Furthermore, I cannot do this to my pack and my brother. "
Savannah looked offended.
"Alpha Lucian is nothing like that, he killed the former Beta because he deserved it. I can't imagine our pack without our Alpha," she said, gesturing around us and continuing.
"I am sorry I didn't mean to offend you, I am just.... rambling I guess." I sighed. Why was it so difficult to accept Lucian and live with my fate?
Savannah still looked pissed.
"Savannah can you please tell me more about Lucian, I mean why did he kill his Beta?"
I could sense her warring with herself.
"Look, I get this is probably a big secret, please, just tell me what happened."
For some reason, I could not care less that Lucian had a reputation of being the big bad wolf. I just wanted to know if he had killed an innocent man.
"Alright, I will try to explain it. The previous Alpha died in the were wars 15 years ago. Alpha Lucian was just 13 then. Since he was too young. Beta Killian took over the pack. His mate Zina wanted power and authority; she was not satisfied with her life. She thought she could keep their positions as Alpha, as ruler, of the pack. She did not go about it in a normal way. She convinced Killian to join her schemes. Fortunately, Lucian was smart beyond his age and resisted their several attempts of eliminating him. At last, they tried to poison Lucian, his mother and all who were their supporters. The poison didn't work right, and they were caught."
I gasped; Lucian had suffered so much.
"Those involved in the plot were all put to death by the Alpha. Unfortunately, the poison did affect his mother, and she lost her senses. She suffers from dementia." My heart cried for Lucian.
"I remember when Lucian took over the pack. We were in a bad shape. The Beta couple had drained our finances into funding their luxuries. Those who could not be killed were cast out. He worked hard to improve our situation and make us wealthy again. What other pack members feel for him is beyond respect. They are very protective of him. They would not be shy to kill anyone who would hurt their Alpha."
"Damm!" I thought.
"Thanks a lot, Savannah, I appreciate your help. I promise you I will not hurt your Alpha. I just need some time. Until then, would you please keep this a secret? "I pleaded.
She looked at me thoughtfully for some time, then nodded.
"Now, about that pack barbecue? What did you want to discuss?" I said, smiling pleasantly, trying to make things back to normal.noveldrama
"The pack has a group barbeque twice a month and one for all special occasions like the Winter Solstice and new year. This year, Alpha rescheduled it because you wanted to spend the solstice with your family." She spoke.
"He did? How thoughtful," I whispered.
"The barbecue is tomorrow. Usually, Katherine and I manage everything, but if you want to do it differently...."
"No, it's fine," I said, cutting her off.
"Just continue whatever you have been doing. I am sure you would be more suitable to manage this barbecue business than me anyway." I said with a tinge of sadness.
She smiled, looking pleased.
I sat in silence after she left. For my part, I now understood how the pack felt, they were protecting their family member, their Alpha. The situation was more complicated than me wanting to reject Lucian. I guess I was not raised like a proper wolf, my isolation had made me selfish. The turn of events over the last few days had turned my world upside down.
When Lucian came back into our suites later that night, I was sitting and staring into the fire. He sat across from me and laid his head in his hands. It took a while for him to say anything, and when he did, it was quiet.
"You are neither fighting nor running away from me today. What's the matter?" He asks softly.
"I am tired of fighting with you," I responded without looking at myself.
"Should I take it as a yes?" He quipped.
I turned towards him. He was eyeing me lustfully.
"No."
"Mmm, what are you afraid of?" He asked.
"I am afraid, I will lose myself," I told him.
Lucian's green eyes focused on my face and softened a little. He walked up to me and sat down beside the fire. I felt his hands stroking up down my back. He pressed his lips softly to my hair, he inhaled deeply, and then he pulled me close.
I rested my head against his chest and continued staring at the fire.
"I met Rick today," he suddenly said." I will take you to meet your family after the pack barbeque. I know you miss them." He whispered.
I stifled a sob.
"Thank you, Lucian, that would be nice," I replied.
"How was your meeting?"
He looked down and shook his head.
"Messed up as usual. I managed to convince a few other Alphas about the impending issue of the rogues. Hopefully, we will have a concrete solution soon."
"Is it that bad?" I felt his eyes boring into me, I wish I could read his thoughts, but that was not possible until we had mated.
"I can handle it," he said casually.
Then he suddenly asked.
"Alice, what do you remember about your mother?"
I turned to face him with a questioning look.
"Why do you want to know about my mother?" I asked.
What do you think?
