Jilted Ex-wife Billionaire Heiress

Chapter 14

Jilted Ex-wife? Billionaire Heiress!

Chapter 14 An Old Trick

The encounter with Darya was unplanned.

It ruffled Micah, for sure, but he'd come here with a mission.

The Hagen Ball was one of the most important networking events of the year.

He wouldn't and couldn't let himself be sidetracked.

Darya stood by the pool, holding a glass of sparkling wine, looking bored.

She thought back to the confrontation earlier, took out her phone, and texted her assistant.

After almost an hour of schmoozing with the guests, shaking hands, and doing the obligatory small talk, she finally begged off.

Avery claimed to hate socialising as well, but he did such a good job of hiding it. He'd shown mercy at last and allowed Darya to slink off while he conversed with Hagen's deputy mayor about upgrading City Hall's IT infrastructure.

Darya had snatched a few bite-sized nibbles of foie gras, then come out to the pool where it was relatively

quiet.

Some guests recognised her as Avery McAllister's plus-one and wanted to strike up a conversation-it would serve them well to be acquainted with the future Mrs McAllister.

But someone else beat them to it.

Regina stomped out onto the patio. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Darya tilted her head. "Admiring the night view."

Regina's impressive chest heaved. "You know damn well that's not what I asked! I mean-what are you doing here, at the Hagen Ball? Did you stalk Micah? You knew he was going to be here, so you somehow sneaked into the party. What are you trying to pull? Are you trying to get back together with him?"

Darya frowned at Regina's pointing finger and shifted her body away.

Regina stepped forward. "You can forget it! Micah's never going to take you back, especially not after you've hooked up with another rich dude!"

She bared her teeth. And I'll make sure Mr McAllister sees your true colour as well. Someone like him deserves much better than a gold-digger like you."

"Are you done?" Darya shot Regina a sidelong glance.

Regina crossed her arms and jutted out her chin.

"If you are worried about me snatching Micah away from you," Darya said, "don't

be. FYI, I divorced him, not the other way around. One man's treasure is

another's trash. You may see him as treasure, whereas for me..." Her voice trailed off as she let Regina draw her own inference.

"How dare you call him trash Regina snarled.

Darya smiled slyly "I didn't say that. You did."

She sipped her sparkling wine, tickled by how easy it was to file Regina up

She couldn't believe she'd let this woman get the better of her for three years Love had really made her stupid.

Regina let out a furious growl and knocked the glass out of Darya's hand

It clattered onto the floor and shattered into pieces.

White wine splashed onto the hem of Darya's dress, making her frown.

"Don't you talk to me like that!" Regina stabbed a finger in Darya's direction. "You think you can look down your nose at me just because you've snagged yourself another rich sugar daddy, but no amount of money can hide the gutter rat stink that's coming off you!"

Darya arched an eyebrow.

Gutter rat?

Was that what Micah told Regina?

Green-eyed and red-faced, Regina examined Darya's outfit. "You wouldn't have any of this the clothes, the jewellery, the makeup-if not for Micah's money! Money he paid you to sell your blood."

Darya looked down at her dress, its hem spattered with wine. "The dress is ruined. You are getting the bill." Regina stepped back, suddenly nervous.

She knew how much a Giambattista Valli couture gown could be worth.

It might not cost an arm and a leg, but it was going to blow a hole in her wallet.

Regina darted her eyes around, noticed they were standing in a shady spot shielded from the public's view, and

had an idea.

She moved forward, grabbed Darya's arm, and shouted in a panicky, plaintive voice, “Please, no! I'm begging you, please don't! Aaah!"noveldrama

Darya watched, mouth agape with incredulity, as Regina jumped into the pool.

The shout and the loud splash drew the attention of guests nearby.

They gathered quickly as Regina floundered about in the water helplessly.

Combining what they saw with what they heard seconds earlier, the onlookers drew the inevitable conclusion -Mr McAllister's date had pushed Mr Cavanaugh's date into the pool, reason unknown.

A familiar, almost identical, scene from three years ago flashed across Darya's mind.

She and Micah did not hold a wedding reception, but news of their marriage was

an open secret for those in Micah's inner circle.

Shortly after, she had run into Regina at a party much like the current one.

She had no idea who Regina was, but the woman made her intention clear with the whispered threat.

"Micah's mine. You are not going to take him away from me. Your marriage means nothing. I'll prove it to you."

Saying that, Regina had fallen backwards into the outdoor pool.

Micah appeared on the scene a second later and dived in without hesitation.

Darya was made the villain and had to endure the pointed looks and murmured judgment.

Just like what was happening now.

Meanwhile, no less than four guests extended a helping hand, trying to get Regina out of the water. The water wasn't deep enough to drown an adult.

But Regina kept flailing her arms, crying out for help as if she didn't see them.

Darya knew what she was waiting for.

As expected, Micah sprinted out onto the patio, took in the scene at a glance, and jumped into the pool immediately, just like he had done three years ago.

Darya watched the couple intertwined with each other in the pool with a mocking smile on her lips.

Regina was trembling visibly as Micah boosted her up out of the pool.

Her chignon was undone.

Strands of wet hair were plastered onto her pale face.

She was a pitiful sight.

But instead of heading into the warmth of the ballroom, she gripped Micah's hand

and begged in a voice loud enough for everyone present to hear, "Micah, it's not her fault. She didn't mean it."

Micah took off his tux jacket and draped it over Regina's shoulders.

"I just wanted to apologise," she continued. "To say I'm sorry for... you know. I

thought she would understand."
