She's Not My Girlfriend
Christina had no choice but to follow Max into the restaurant. It was either that or wait out there in the car and she didn't trust him enough to wait. For all she knew, it might be a prank to keep her out there until she was tired and frustrated while he remained inside.
She was at least going to make sure that he was serious about eating so that he would finish on time and take her back home. At this point, she would've chosen to wait for Bryce instead of following him home. He was intentionally trying his best to irritate her and it was pretty obvious.
"What would you like to have? I'm pretty sure that you haven't had lunch yet?" Max questioned but she only looked away. He approached a table and pulled out a chair for her to sit which she did reluctantly.
"So?" He repeated in respect to his previous question but she only shook her head negatively.
"I'm not hungry thank you." She answered with a lie and folded her hands over her chest. She was hungry but she couldn't bring herself to tell him especially when she wasn't on good terms with him.
"You're going to starve and-" Max's words were disrupted by a sudden ringtone. He pulled out his phone and placed to his ears. It was Bryce.
"Where the heck are both of you Max? I just got off the phone with Hera and she told me that Christina is yet to arrive home." Bryce groaned from the other end of the line. "Did something happen?"
"Chill. We're both fine. As a matter of fact, I'm trying to have lunch." Max answered conversionally and pulled the phone away from his ears briefly before darting his eyes at the menu card in front of him.
"Two burgers, a packet of french fries and soda to go with it. Thank you." He said with a smile to the waiter who was standing next to him to take his order.
"You were saying?" He asked when he placed the phone back to his ears for the second time.
"You're having lunch? How can you be having lunch instead of taking her home? Hera is worried sick and so am i." Bryce's distressed voice came through.
"I'm starving buddy. I didn't have anything to eat before you sent me on this top mission so please, let me have this." Max sighed deeply and glanced at Christina who was looking everywhere but him.
"And relax. She's with me. Nothing will happen to her as long as she's with me." He assured Bryce which earned him a look from Christina. "You can speak to her if that'll put your mind at ease."
"No it's fine. I'm just worried that's all. Please take her home as soon as you're finished. I'll keep Hera updated so that she doesn't worry."
"Copy that, Sir." Max answered teasingly before disconnecting the phone call. His order was brought and placed in front of him and he thanked the waiter before digging in.
"So what's your major?" Max inquired, earning him a look from Christina. "I mean, we might as well have a conversation with each other while I eat so that you don't get bored or do you forbid that too?"
She sighed deeply before saying, "Business Administration."
"Cool." He conceded with a smile. "You know, I happen to have some experience in that field so if in the future, you happen to perhaps hate me less than you already do and need my help with anything then feel free to reach out to me. I promise to not say no."
"Not a chance. Bryce will help me out if I need it. We obviously can't stand each other so what's the point of asking you for help anyway?"
"Well, in case you change your mind, I'll still be happy to help. My offer is still on the table whenever you want it, cupcake." He assured her and bit into his burger. Christina watched him eat as she pondered on how long they were going to be here because of him. If anything, he didn't seem to care.noveldrama
She had never met someone so carefree and so different who also doesn't play by the rules. She could tell just by looking at him that he was stuck in his own world and does things the way he wants them. He pretty much is so locked out on everything happening around him. How did he end up as Bryce's friend?
"You're staring." Max tilted his head to the side with a short laugh. "Why? Do you find me mysterious and interesting?"
Christina looked away feeling embarrassed that he had caught her staring. That was the last thing that she wanted to happen and now, he won't keep quiet about
it.
"I don't find you mysterious or interesting. You're neither of those things so why should I waste my time doing that?" She blew out a sharp breath. "Are you done yet? I want to go home. Surely, you can continue your meal later right?"
"Impatient little thing." He muttered under his breath and gestured to the waiter for his bill. He was about to open it when someone approached their table.
"Max." An excited voice called out to
him. He looked up to see a woman
staring at him. She was clad in a blue floral dress that rode up her thighs and black heels. Her hair fell in deep locs over her shoulders with her purse draped over her arm. "I could've sworn that it was you. I had no idea that a busy man like you eats out." She added with a smile.
Max glanced from the excited woman who couldn't stop talking to Christina who
looked at him, bored to death and a little curious too.
"I'm sorry but do I know you?" He asked when he couldn't bring himself to recognize her face. Goodness! He had slept with multiple women and half the population of the state over the past years and he'd be lying if he said that he would recognize each and every one of them.
"Don't you remember me? I'm Lara. We met at a business seminar like two months ago. I can understand if you don't recognize me, it's been a while we're being honest. I just saw you sitting here and thought I should say hi." She stretched out her hands for a shake and he took it. "I can see that you have company. Hello." She waved at Christina who smiled back at her.
"He actually doesn't have company so I'll leave you two to catch up." Christina said as she quickly picked up her bags and rose up to her feet. "I'll be waiting at the car." She announced before walking out of their presence in hurried strides.
Great! He had been trying all afternoon to get her on his good side and now, he might as well kiss that forgiveness goodbye. He keeps unintentionally adding himself to her blacklist. At this rate, he'd never get her to forgive him or accept his apology which he doesn't even know why he's so hellbent on getting it in the first place.
"Who's that beautiful lady? Your woman?" Lara asked, jolting Max back from his reverie. "Since when did the great Max suddenly become serious about a relationship?"
"She's not my girlfriend and I'm not In a relationship." He denied that possiblity as quickly as she had said it. "She's just a friend." Or at least he hoped that she was. "Why are you here? Is there a particular reason why you approached my table to talk to me?" He asked, feeling slightly irritated. Somehow, she had ruined the ground work for getting on Christina's good side and he needed a good reason to why she did it.
Lara pushed a strand of hair behind her ears casually at that question. "You didn't reach out to me after that night so I thought that well, I did something wrong maybe?"
Max settled the bills and handed it over to the waiter who took it gratefully before standing to his feet. "Was I supposed to? We agreed that it was just casual sex didn't we? No strings attached? Doesn't it ring a bell? You had an itch and I scratched it for you. Wasn't that the whole plan?"
"Well, I..."
"Look Lara, I'm sorry but there's no future for us and if for any reason you did
think that there was, then you thought wrong."
He straightened himself with a sigh and continued. "I'm not keen on
romance or happily ever after neither am I the type of guy that a woman like you should waste Ker
breath on. You and I have nothing going on so unless for business reasons in the future, please refrain from approaching me in public or acting like we're a thing. I find it particularly irritating especially when I didn't ask for it."
"If that'll be all then I'll take my leave now. Excuse me." He said to Lara and made
his way to leave when his eyes caught that of Christina's staring right back at him
with
a disappo
inted look that said she pretty much heard everything that he had just said.
