Samantha blinked, still trying to process everything. How had Finley gotten hurt? She genuinely didn't know.

"I don't know," she replied softly, shaking her head.

Finley studied her momentarily, asking, "So, what made you marry me?"

She reflected on that moment. "Because... I liked you."

"That's it? Nothing else?" he pressed.

Samantha confirmed, "Yeah, that's it. I liked you, so I married you. Is that not enough?"

Finley had always assumed she married him out of obligation. Now, he realized maybe she had done it out of real affection.

Looking at her, he swiftly pulled her close and asked, "What made you like me? Did we even know each other back then?"

Of course, we've known each other for ages, Samantha thought. She gave a slight nod. "Yes, we did. I randomly met you one day, and... that's when it started."

Surprised, Finley asked, "Was it instant attraction?"

Samantha grinned, shaking her head. "No, not really. It's not that simple. It was more like a love that grew over time."

She hadn't liked Finley at all. In fact, she resented him, blaming him for wrecking her future with Noah. Yet as days passed and memories of their moments together resurfaced, especially during her most vulnerable times, she realized her feelings had slowly shifted. Finley always had a knack for making her feel better when she was upset. He'd hold her tight during storms, comforting her even when he was in pain himself. Besides, he'd done the most unexpected things -like chopping down those fruit trees he'd planted just to replace them with osmanthus flowers because of something she once said in passing.

Finley had given her everything in their previous life, while she had barely given him anything. She'd hurt him so much, and in the end, it had cost him his life.

That remorse still haunted her.

Samantha clung to him, her voice soft but determined. "Finley, I've never been one to believe in love at first sight. It's too fleeting. Yet, the kind of love that grows? That's what lasts."

"I've made so many mistakes in the past. I don't think I'll make those same mistakes again with you because I know you'd never let me."

Finley glanced at her, gently stroking her back. "You'll be the only name in mine, too. No one else."

Samantha raised an eyebrow, teasing him, "I'm not your first, am I? There have been others."

Finley shook his head and replied, "You're the only one that matters. Those women... they didn't count. There was no real marriage." "Okay, but what about Amy?" she asked.

Finley smiled. "She doesn't matter either. The only one I've really married is you."

Samantha chuckled, cupping his face. "Well, my sweet Finley is learning to be charming. I'm into it."Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.

She moved closer, kissed him softly, and thought, It doesn't matter how many women came before me. I, Samantha Wallace, will be your last.
