Chapter 1217
Chapter 1217 Maeve Relapsesnoveldrama
Back then, the reason she asked Charles to name their daughter Marcy Luther was actually... in the event that this happened.
Maeve Lenoir's condition was much like her mother's-terminal with no cure.
Her previous operation had only served to prolong Maeve's lifespan.
"The doctor said that if Cherry and Dr. Staber helped, it would give her a fighting chance," Blake said with his head bent, his voice raspy with emotion. "Charles was inconsolable. He was still crying when he collapsed outside the operating theatre. Damien and the others are also rushing to get here as fast as possible."
Cherise clamped her fists tightly, her knuckles turning white.
Seated next to her, Lucy's face had bleached color as well.
It had been nearly six months since either of them had performed surgery. Plus, the procedure that Maeve needed demanded great stamina, focus, and expertise. They feared the two of them... may not be in the best shape to do it.
"We're here!" Otto announced as he parked the car.
The hospital was already under lockdown. Bodyguards for the Lenoir and Luther families lined the corridor filled with family where everyone was standing in silence.
Having recovered from his faint, Charles was still weak and could no longer stand. He was seated in a wheelchair, staring despondently at the glaring red words "In Surgery."
"Dr. Shaw and Dr. Staber are here!" someone called out.
Charles immediately raised his head. He turned around, stumbling from his wheelchair in his eagerness to approach Cherise and Lucy. "Dr. Shaw, Dr. Staber... please, save my wife!"
The seven-foot-tall man appeared broken before the two women, his face wet with tears. "I know it's been a long time since you've operated... If it weren't an emergency, I wouldn't have requested for both of you... But Maeve... she can't wait any longer..."
Cherise drew in a lungful of air and crouched down to help Charles up. "Do you remember what I told you previously? Your wife's condition..."
It's hopeless.
From the start, Cherise had made it clear to Charles that Maeve's condition was not curable. All the surgeries and treatments only helped to extend her life, to leave her more leeway before she passed.
Yet Charles had urged Cherise to maintain the public façade that Maeve was completely well. He reasoned that Maeve would only face life with a smile if she believed she was fully cured.
At that time, Cherise agreed, thinking he had a point.
But Maeve never truly believed she had completely healed after her operation; it was Charles... who had been lying to himself.
To this day.
"I know," Charles said, closing his eyes and smiling bitterly. "These days, watching her gradually brighten, start loving life, and live joyfully day by day, it made it hard to remember that... she was still sick."
"So, why did her condition suddenly worsen now?" Lucy asked coldly, frowning beside him.
Charles bowed his head, unable to utter a word.
"I asked you a question!" Lucy lifted her brows and coldly demanded.
Charles hung his head like a chastened child, his voice raspy and almost inaudible, "Maeve was bringing lunch, for me at the company. She saw..."
"Saw my secretary and I..." He couldn't finish his words.
"You bastard." Lucy strode towards Charles and kicked him with force. "You know her heart is weak and still stress her like this? Scum like you don't deserve to live. If you couldn't see it through to the end, you should never have gotten involved with her from the beginning! Now you're the reason she's in pain. What kind of person are you?"
Charles couldn't defend himself. He dared not lift his head, murmuring, "I know this is my fault..."
What do you think?
