Chapter 461
Jean was all too familiar with the sound of Brad's footsteps. As soon as she heard him hurrying toward her ward, she winked at Lynn, urging her to stop talking.
Lynn looked in the direction Jean was pointing and immediately fell silent. Then, she took a few steps back and stood obediently beside the bed.noveldrama
Her face was etched with concern as she urged Jean, who was sitting on the ground, "Ms. Sawyer, please, you need to get up! The floor is too cold, and it could aggravate your condition! What if you end up catching a cold?"
As soon as those words rolled off her tongue, Lynn winked at Jean, who immediately slipped into character.
With a resentful expression, Jean sat on the ground and coughed violently before yelling, "What's the point of living like this? I might as well be dead! I can't find a suitable kidney donor, and everyone's so mean to me! With the way Mr. Hamilton Senior is torturing me... what's left to live for?"
Tears started streaming down her cheeks like a broken dam. Lynn pretended to help her up and said, "Come on, Ms. Sawyer. Don't cry. You'll catch a cold sitting on the cold floor. Mr. Hamilton will be beside himself if you fall ill!"
With her help, Jean slowly rose from the ground. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Brad's coat, and she began to wail, "You're right, I shouldn't worry him anymore. My illness is already a heavy weight on his heart.
"If I catch anything else, I'll only add to his worries. Help me to bed, and don't breathe a word about what happened today. Not a word must of this can him!"
Lynn's voice rose in indignation. "Ms. Sawyer, look at how unwell you are! As your boyfriend, shouldn't Mr. Hamilton be here for you more often? It's one thing for him to not be with you, but to allow his family to pick on you? That's just cruel!"
Jean turned around, looked in the direction where Brad stood, and gasped dramatically. "What are you doing here, Brad? I thought you were too busy to visit-" Her words were cut short by a series of racking coughs. She looked so fragile, like a delicate flower any man would feel compelled to care for.
Brad had just seen those pictures and was seething with anger. He had a ton of questions for Jean, but when he saw her in such a fragile state, his heart ached, and he completely forgot about all the questions he wanted to ask.
He hurried over and helped her back into bed. "Why aren't you listening to your caretaker when you're this ill? Can't you just stay put? Look at you, you're so pale... Do you have a death wish?" he chided softly.
The second he walked into the hospital room and realized Jean had been thinking of him the whole time, the anger that had consumed him moments ago began to dissipate, replaced by a profound sense of guilt.
Jean had always put him first, and yet he'd doubted her over something insignificant. He felt undeserving of her trust.
Even though his concern filled her with happiness, she made sure not to let it show. Jean gazed at him with adoration. "Brad, your grandpa just wants what's best for you. You know he's never liked me. He's always favored Nadine, so understand why he acts the way he does toward me."
As she said that, she "accidentally" showed a part of her milky white arm. There was a big purple bruise there from when she'd been struggling a couple of days ago. Even though Adam hadn't had anyone beat her up, that big bruise was hard to miss against her pale skin.
Brad immediately noticed the unsightly bruise. Without a second thought, he grabbed her arm and demanded, "What happened?"
Jean had called him in tears, claiming that Adam had harassed her and even brought bodyguards to rough her up. He hadn't believed her at the time. He thought she was merely making things up. After all, someone of his grandfather's stature would not stoop to such actions.
But seeing the large bruise on her arm now, he had no choice but to believe her story.
What do you think?
