A Common Ground To Walk On
"What exactly did you put in here that's so heavy?" Max groaned as he pulled out the last of Christina's luggage from the trunk of his car as soon as they arrived at her apartment. He threw his eyes at her direction only to see her subtly glaring at him.
She's never forgiving him. That's a truth he has almost come to peace with. Almost. Here he was trying to make light of the situation since she hasn't talked to him all through the drive and like usual, she was still uninterested.
"You seriously owe me for this." He said trying to make small talk but she doesn't respond.
"Are you really going to ignore me forever, cupcake?"
"It's Christina and yes, I plan to." She answered nonchalantly. "And if it's any consolation, I actually didn't want you to help me but Bryce insisted and you agreed to it when he asked so I don't owe you anything."
"I agreed to it because it's not like you have anyone else to do it for you."
"That's the thing. I never asked you to do it. We can't even stand each other so what makes you think that agreeing to help me will change anything?" She questioned with a raised brow.
"Don't use me as a excuse cause I would've waited for Bryce to get back from his summit to help me if I wanted to." She retorted, pushing a strand of hair behind
her ears.
"So why didn't you tell him that you wanted to wait when he insisted on me helping you anyway? You're good at telling people what to do."
She glared at him, hard. "Because he's your best friend and if I keep on declining everytime he asks you to do something for me then it'll only raise suspicions."
"Hera already suspects that something is wrong and it's only a matter of time before she figures it out herself. That'll raise questions and believe me, any answer I provide to those questions will not in any way look good for you. I'm guessing that's why you also can't refuse to help me too cause you also don't want Bryce to find out about what you did."
"So what? You're going to tell him that I screwed up by asking you to sleep with me?"
Christina's eyes flew open. Her mouth slightly open as her jaw almost dropped to the ground. How can he say such things so freely. Doesn't he have any shame? Well, it's Max so she can't expect anything less. Shame was sadly not a word in his vocabulary.noveldrama
"Keep your voice down." She mouthed in a whisper. Her eyes shooting him warning daggers to drop the conversation.
"You know what, I'm not going to listen to you." He answered in disagreement. His eyes glinting mischievously. "I'm done feeling sorry for myself. You keep talking about how I screwed up and since you don't want to forgive me despite everything I've done then let's talk about it if it'll make you hate me any less."
"I don't hate you." Christina blurted out. It wasn't the truth but it wasn't exactly a lie though. If there was a thin line between hate and dislike then she's probably standing in the middle of it.
"It doesn't mean that you like me either. You know what, I hate you as much as you hate me so let's make a truce." He pushed his hair backwards, hands resting on his hips as he faced her.
"Let's just try to tolerate each other's presence from this moment, moving forward in our lives." He started and she folded her arms across her chest.
"I'm obviously not going anywhere cause like it or not, I'm a part of Bryce's life and by extension, Hera as well. You're going to see me everyday and so will I."
"You're going to run into me all the time. If it makes you feel any better then I'm going to be in your life for a very long time as well." It sounded like a threat but even though Christina didn't want to admit it, she knew that he was making a solid point.
"We can't keep acting like this or it'll blow on our faces sooner or later."
"Well, I don't care if it does. It's not like I'll be the one getting in trouble." She rolled her eyes at him. "This is all on you."
"I know." He conceded. "But I also know that you don't want to be the reason why Bryce and I have problems which is why you haven't said anything till now so please, let's find a common ground to walk on."
He stretched out his hands at her. "What do you say? Truce?"
Christina stared at his stretched hands, weighing her options. She hated him but he was right. The more the negative tension between them, the more everyone would want to figure out what is wrong and she didn't want that.
"Truce." She shook his hands, earning a smile from him. She lets go of his hands almost immediately and made her way into her apartment with her bags.
Max trailed after her, his eyes following her slowly till they got inside.
"Your place looks lovely." He complimented from behind her and she turned to see him grinning down at her. She nodded at him and took a few steps away from where he
stood. For some reason, she didn't want to be close to him, yet.
"You don't have to avoid me like a plague you know. I don't bite." Max uttered but Christina pretended not to hear. They only shook hands so he shouldn't think that they're friends already.
"Can I have a glass of water?" Max requested, wiping the sweat of his forehead. Without answering, Christina walked past him into the kitchen to get a glass for him. Max trailed behind her in steady strides. He watched her pick up a glass from the cabinet, his eyes following her every move.
"I'm yet to arrange the kitchen so until then-" Her words are cut short followed by a loud gasp when she accidentally bumped into him, dropping the glass on the floor which caused it to break into pieces.
"Oh no!" She exclaimed, eyes filled with shock at the mess she had made on the floor.
"Don't move." Max warned her in a serious tone when she tried to stoop down to pick up the broken pieces on the floor, stopping her from making another move. "You'll only hurt yourself so just stay still."
Reaching for her hands, he wrapped
riter
it around his neck and in one swift move, he picked her up from the
ground like she weighed nothingnet
carrying her in his arms so that she was straddled against his chest to steady herself from falling
"You won't fall. I won't let you fall." He glanced down at Christina in reassurance, forcing her to look away. She felt something stir inside her at those words and she didn't want to dwell on it.
They arrived at the living room and he carefully sat her down before cleaning up the glass in the kitchen.
"Thank you, I mean it." Christina blurted out calmly and Max stared at her in surprise. He couldn't believe his ears. She was actually thanking him.
Christina knew deep down that she might not like him but she was grateful for his help either way.
"I can't let anything happen to you under my watch or your brother in-law will have my head so you're welcome." He informed her. "Since we're done here, I'll take my leave."
He turned to leave when her next words stopped him in his tracks. "Bryce
well...he um..." She stuttered, standing up to her feet.
"What's this about?" He asked, concerned.
"It's something important." She answered, not knowing how to properly relay her message to him.
"You can go ahead and tell me what it is cupcake. I don't bite."
"It's my business project. Bryce said that he'd ask you to help me out."
"So you do need my help after all." He teased in a flirtatious tone, his lips stretching into a thin line. "I thought that you said you'd never ask me to help you?"
"I didn't have any reason to ask you to help me before but Bryce insisted because he's out of town for work and besides, you said that the offer was on the table whenever I needed it so will you help me or not?"
Max pretended to give her request some thought while Christina looked on.
"Okay." He said after the brief
silence. "But only help you if you help me." He declared all of a
sudden have something important to do tomorrow so if you agree to lend a hand then I'll see
what I can do about your project.
What do you say?"
"What's it about?"
"You'll find out tomorrow but I can promise that it's not anything bad or dangerous.
You have my word." He gave his solemn promise.
Christina pondered on the offer. How does she know that she could trust him?
What if he was trying to get her
into trouble? This could all end up badly but for some reason, she said yes, agreeing to his offer.
What do you think?
